Academic and novelist Charles Latimer, the unlikely hero of The Mask of Dimitrios, returns thirty years later in The Intercom Conspiracy. Now a successful, bestselling author on the trail of a new book, Latimer steps in to help Theodore Carter, the hapless, hard-drinking editor of Intercom, a small, international political newspaper, investigate his bosses and the sources of the secrets he's publishing. As Latimer and Carter get closer to the truth, they realise they're jeopardising more than just their careers. 'Effortless narrative... informed with a sense of how things actually work. The Intercom Conspiracy might fairly be described as a conscienceless send-up of the whole idea of secret intelligence.' - The Sunday Times 'Much wry humour and a great knowledge of the spy racket. To be read slowly, enjoyably.' - Evening Standard
The Intercom Conspiracy Eric Ambler Books
Did not age well! I loved(!) Eric Ambler when I was younger (30 years ago). Now I read this book again to find out if I wanted to give it to a friend as a present. I decided not to. The reason, I think, is that the time of this book has passed: the Cold War is over, the political and human entanglements that were fascinating then are no longer acute, the characters were really old fashioned and finally I just could not find any interest in finding the solution of the spy mistery. Sorry, Mr. Ambler, we had good times together, but maybe it is time to go our separate ways.Product details

The Intercom Conspiracy Eric Ambler Books Reviews
This book is the worst book by Ambler that I have read. I did not even finish the book but skipped frankly to the end
This was my first Eric Ambler book. I gather it was late in his series of novels. That might have been a significant cause for my negative review. I simply couldn't get into this story. I didn't care for the plot or the characters. I kept wondering what the Big Deal was. I doubt that I will read another book of Mr. Ambler's. In doing a little research, I discovered that the author was quite prolific and that one of his screenplays was A Night to Remember. Of all the movies/books that I have seen/read about the Titanic, this was a favorite of mine. So this is an odd comparison. I could hardly wait to finish the Intercom Conspiracy and questioned my reasoning for seeing it to the end. Then I was dumbfounded when the end came so abruptly and I was back wondering what the Big Deal was.
This late book from Eric Ambler is one of his best. I was charmed by the main characters and the brief return of the main character from "A Coffin for Dimitrios".
Sense of places and of danger are good as usual. Tension is maintained and intellectual interest. Psychiatrist future son in law is trivial but interesting in context of era and nation.
An interesting story told by various characters and in a different Ambler style. It's about intrigue and espionage, false identities and mistaken identities, and a lot more. Not one of the best (in fact a bit confusing at time) but a good fast read.

The INTERCOME CONSPIRACY is the same book as THE QUIET CONSPIRACY. Be careful when ordering books, fortunately I noticed this before I ordered.
A QUIET CONSPIRACY (aka The Intercom Conspiracy) Paperback – 1 Jan 1989
by Eric Ambler (Author)
Got to love Ambler! Before Ludlum, Forsyth, Deighton, et al, there was Eric, single-handily inventing the political thriller. His work has a realism and quiet sophistication that is rarely if ever matched. One of his lesser known works, but highly original and entertaining, this one a bit more in the Le Carre tradition. If you enjoy any of the aforementioned , Ambler is where it all started.
